Last-Minute School Prep

So much for Scooby-Doo. My daughter is now the proud owner of a brand-new Penguins of Madagascar backpack. That’s it; my days (nay, weeks) of back-to-school shopping are officially over. Let the second grade begin! My kid is ready, both physically and mentally. I’m almost there. It’s time to bid farewell to summer, but before we do there are a few things we have left to do this weekend: Magical Meals: Once school starts breakfasts will be abbreviated and consist of dishes that can be made and consumed in less than 10 minutes. Meanwhile, lunches will be packed the night … Continue reading

Back To School Jitters

The end of summer signifies the beginning of a new school year. Some children become bored over the summer months and love the additional socialization that a new school year brings. Many children have had a wonderful summer filled with all kinds of things to do and dread this time of the year. It brings a great deal of anxiety for them. Here are some things that you can do to help children make the back to school transition a bit easier: *Talk to your child about his fears or concerns. Let him know that his concern is important even … Continue reading

School Board Cuts out Lunch Choices

I can remember the days of walking into the cafeteria line and picking up my tray. There were no questions of what I wanted on my plate or what I planned to eat that day. I simply got my food, sat down, and ate. Things are much different in school cafeterias today. The children walk in first thing in the morning and are given several choices for their meal that day. At 8:00 in the morning students are asked to choose between three to six meal choices. In the cafeteria the children must choose among about six different types of … Continue reading

School Cafeterias are Losing Money

It is a growing trend for more and more students to bring their lunch to school. More and more parents are packing up lunch boxes rather than paying the cafeteria for their children’s lunch. Some parents pack lunches due to picky eaters while others are simply being cost conscious. For whatever the reason, cafeterias are taking note. Cafeterias are noticing the trend. They say that they are being forced to give students more options and better food in order to try to increase the number of children who purchase lunch from them. My school cafeteria presently offers two entrees and … Continue reading

Cafeteria or Lunchbox?

As the beginning of school nears closer (I have only three weeks of summer vacation left!), there will be many decisions parents and children will need to make. One such decision concerns lunch. Will your child eat lunch from the cafeteria or will you prepare it from home. In my classroom, I typically have three or four students who are avid lunch bringers. I will then also have a couple of students who bring their lunch occasionally. In addition, I will have those two or three students who bug their parents until they get to bring their lunch once or … Continue reading

School Lunch: Freedom of Leaving Items Off

Hopefully you have taken the advice of Aimee Amodio and sat down with your child to review the school lunch menu. If you have, you probably did not notice a major change in the lunches served. Pizza, hot dogs, and French fries are still on the menu. However, school lunches are healthier. Wheat bread products and low fat mixes are being used. More foods are being baked instead of fried. Vending machine junk food items have been removed from the schools. Drink machines are full of water and juices. This is a big change from the past. At one time, … Continue reading

Elizabeth Edwards Is Stuck No Matter What She Says

I don’t remember home schooling being such a talked about issue in previous elections. I suspect it wasn’t. But maybe I just wasn’t at a point in my life where I cared. But this time around, it seems like everyone has some opinion on home schooling. I realize it’s not at the forefront and frankly, I’d rather it not be. But nonetheless it’s there and candidates are talking about it. Or at least their wives are. The Edwards’ Camp Kind Of Sort Of Homeschooling Recently Elizabeth Edwards sat down to give an interview on the issue. In case you’re wondering … Continue reading

“Brother for Sale.” Helping Kids Cope with their Sibling’s Disability

What would otherwise be normal sibling rivalry is even more complex between a special needs and a typical child. The child without a disability will experience a wide variety of feelings, all of which are perfectly normal and understandable. As parents, there are some ways to help encourage positive relationships between our children, while also recognizing their different emotional needs. Here are some typical emotions that siblings of special needs children may experience: Resentment: Siblings might resent the extra attention, time, and emotional focus that is directed toward the special needs sibling. They may resent it if they are given … Continue reading
